The role
The Spitalfields Historic Buildings Trust (the ‘Trust’) is looking for a part-time administrator (equivalent of 2 days a week) to work with and support the other Administrators and trustees. The Spitalfields Trust is an active Building Preservation Trust with ongoing projects, it campaigns for the preservation of the historic environment, primarily in the East End of London. The Trust also owns and manages ‘Dennis Severs House’ (18 Folgate Street) an eighteenth-century town house in Spitalfields which it opens to the public, the Trust’s offices are also based there.
The role is involved with all aspects of the Trust’s business and will require an individual with professional flexibility, initiative and imagination as well as considerable organising skills.
An interest (and ideally experience in) building conservation projects and campaigning for the historic environment are essential.
At least one working day a week will need to be based at 18 Folgate Street.

Principal duties and responsibilities
- To support the business of the Trust, that primarily being its role as a Building Preservation Trust and in managing Dennis Severs’ House
- To provide basic administrative support to ensure the efficient running of the Trust, such as dealing with covenants, invoices, applying for and administering grants
- Seeking out new building project opportunities and funding options
- Managing building projects and engaging with all relevant stakeholders
- Engaging in campaigns for the historic environment, including: Writing letters, attending meetings for the Trust, using social media, writing press releases and liaising with the press
- Using social media to promote the work of the Trust
- Attending trustees meetings
- Helping to ensure Dennis Severs’ House is managed efficiently, including attending weekly house meetings and engaging in all aspects of its maintenance, conservation and operation
Applicant Requirements
Applicants should be:
- Qualified to degree level in a relevant subject (such as architecture, history of art/architecture, surveying)
- A committed building conservation professional
- Either have a qualification from an IHBC-recognised course (https://ihbc.org.uk/learning/page35/index.php) or at least 2 years’ experience working in the building conservation sector.
Type of contract & salary
- part-time (equivalent of 16 hours per week) one year fixed term contract
- £26,000 – £30,000 pro rata depending on experience
